New for 2017
The Porsche Macan enters 2017 with a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, bringing the base price of the lineup below $50,000. Also, a new sporty GTS model promises even more driving pleasure.
Vehicle Summary
The Macan is Porsche’s compact sports-luxury SUV that’s smaller than the Cayenne and is a great option for someone who wants a Porsche and the Cayman is too small but the Cayenne is too big.
Overview
The 2017 Porsche Macan now has four turbocharged engine choices starting with a 2.0-liter flat-four that produces 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque while achieving 20/25 mpg city/highway; all other Macans are EPA rated at 17/23 mpg. If you opt for the Macan S, under the hood you’ll find a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that’s good for 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The Macan GTS produces more power, with 360 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. At the top of the Macan lineup is the Macan Turbo, which is powered by a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 with 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. The Macan comes standard with all-wheel drive and with Porsche’s impressive seven-speed twin-clutch automatic.
The 2017 Macan comes with more standard features than before including HID headlights, 8-way power front seats, Alcantara seat centers, the newest generation of Porsche’s infotainment system, a piano black interior package, and a lane departure warning system. If you prefer top-of-the-line, the Turbo model has the most powerful twin-turbo V6 option, attractive 20-inch wheels, LED running lights, adaptive headlights, suede-like headliner, 18-way adaptive and heated sport seats, navigation, and a 14-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system.
Safety
The Macan comes with a nice list of standard safety features including traction and stability control, front and rear seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, front knee airbags, lane departure warning system, and parking sensors on the front and on the rear of the vehicle. Other available features include a forward collision warning and mitigation system, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot warning system, and a lane keeping assist system.
When Motor Trend tested the 2015 Macan S and Macan Turbo, we recorded stopping distances from 60 mph at 119 ft. and 102 ft., respectively, decent and very good performances.
What We Think
When we drove the Porsche Macan at 2015 SUV of the Year testing, we had few complaints. Editors could not stop raving about its handling ability on and off road. As one editor commented, the Macan exhibited “such poise, sure-footedness and lock-down body motion control.” The only negatives were the high price for its class and tight rear seats.
Motor Trend’s 2017 Macan GTS First Drive review was held at Pikes Peak, and we again praised the crossover for its sports-cars-like handling and powerful engine. “And just like a WRX STI, the Macan GTS has got the grip and handling chops to carve its way up (or down) a twisty mountain road.” We also appreciated the Macan’s very luxurious interior and comfortable ride from the available air suspension.
Cool Fact
The Porsche Macan Turbo can hit 60 mph in a very quick (and Motor Trend tested) 4.2 seconds.
